Ethyl glycolate is a synthetic chemical that is used as a solvent. It is a colorless liquid that has a sweet odor and is soluble in water, ethanol, acetone, ether, chloroform, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride. Ethyl glycolate has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. It also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to receptors on the cell wall.
