Ethyl isocyanatoformate (EIA) is an organic compound that belongs to the group of chemical compounds containing a carbonyl group. It has been used as an antimicrobial agent in the treatment of hyperproliferative diseases and leukemia. EIA inhibits the growth of bacteria by reacting with hydroxyl groups on their cell walls, thereby preventing bacterial growth and reproduction. Hyperproliferative cells are unable to synthesize fatty acids, which are essential for cellular membrane stability. Inhibition of fatty acid synthesis leads to cell death in these cells.
