Ethyl 3-oxo-4-phenylbutanoate is an impurity of the drug 4-nitrophenylacetic acid, which is used in the synthesis of the anti-cancer drug oxaliplatin. This chemical is a marker for the presence of 4-nitrophenylacetic acid and can be detected by gas chromatography. The profile of this compound includes impurities such as 2,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid and 2,5-diketopiperazine. Epidemiological studies have shown that this impurity is a potential risk factor for breast cancer. Basic hydrolysis of ethyl 3-oxo-4-phenylbutanoate has been shown to generate chloride ions and oxobutanoate ions.
