This compound is capable of binding to methylene groups on proteins and may interfere with the function of these molecules, which are involved in cell division. 1-Ethyl-1H-indole-3-carbaldehyde also exhibits strong vibrational and optical properties; it absorbs strongly in the ultraviolet region (280 nm) and has a low extinction coefficient at 400 nm. Its absorption spectrum extends into the visible region as well, where it exhibits intense coloration.
