Ethyl 3-cyano-6-methyl-2-oxo-1,2-dihydro-pyridine-4-carboxylate is a chiral compound that is synthesized from cyanoacetamide and sodium cyanide. It is an analgesic drug with a low toxicity and low side effects. Ethyl 3Cyano6methyl2oxo1,2dihydropyridine4carboxylate has been demonstrated to be effective against pain in animal studies. The analgesic effect may be due to its ability to inhibit the epoxide hydrolase enzyme, which converts arachidonic acid into prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This drug can also act as an alkylating agent.
