Ethyl (2E)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-2-propenoate is a metal salt that can be synthesized by the reaction of nitronium ions with cinnamic acid. It is used as a precursor in organic synthesis. This compound has been shown to produce stereochemically pure nitrovinyl chloride, which can be used for the synthesis of other organic compounds. The yield of this reaction can be increased by using chloride salts and 2-nitrobenzaldehyde as the starting materials. Ethyl (2E)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-2-propenoate reacts with alkali metals to produce ethyl cinnamate, which has been reported to have anticonvulsant properties.
