Epicatechin has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α. (+/-)-Epicatechin has also been shown to increase insulin sensitivity and enhance glucose uptake. The physiological effects of (+/-)-epicatechin are mediated through its binding with receptors on the surface of cells, including PPARs and GPR40, which stimulate the activity of enzymes involved in fat metabolism.
