Ethyl 2-chlorobenzoate reacts with alkalis to form chloroethanoic acid and hydrogen chloride gas. The reaction is reversible, so hydrolysis occurs in acidic environments. Ethyl 2-chlorobenzoate may also cause congestive heart failure due to its high toxicity.
