a-Ecdysone is a hormone that belongs to the ecdysteroids. It is a natural compound that is involved in the regulation of insect development, metabolism and immunity. This hormone has been shown to have an effect on energy metabolism and is used as a model system for studying this process. Ecdysis, or molting, is regulated by a-ecdysone and its analogs. The hormone binds to DNA and activates transcription of genes that are responsible for the synthesis of enzymes involved in energy metabolism. a-Ecdysone also has receptor activity, which may be due to its ability to bind to ryanodine receptors in cells. These receptors regulate calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum during muscle contraction.
