8-O-ethylyunaconitine is a secondary metabolite of the plant Uncaria tomentosa, which is used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has been found to have anti-inflammatory and antitumor properties, as well as being a reference material for HPLC standards. 8-O-ethylyunaconitine is an inhibitor of protein synthesis and may be useful in the treatment of cancer. 8-O-ethylyunaconitine also binds to DNA and inhibits RNA synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting essential metabolic processes including protein synthesis.
