Ethyl 2,6-difluorobenzoate is a difluorobenzene derivative that has been shown to be cytotoxic against human skin tumor cells. It is also a substrate for the all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA) synthetic pathway and has been used in the treatment of hyperproliferative diseases such as psoriasis and mycosis fungoides. Ethyl 2,6-difluorobenzoate reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce ethyl 2,4,6-trichlorobenzoate and chloride ions. The reaction time can be shortened by adding an acidic solution containing chloride ions to the reaction mixture.
