4-(2,3-Dihydroindol-1-yl)-4-oxo-butyric acid is a hydrophobic molecule that deactivates the catalytic site of palmitoleate hydroxylase. It has been shown to bind to the binding site of this enzyme through hydrophobic interactions. 4-(2,3-Dihydroindol-1-yl)-4-oxo-butyric acid also catalyzes the hydrolysis of palmitoleic acid by covalently adducting to a cysteine residue on the active site of the enzyme. This reaction is mechanistically similar to other reactions that involve nucleophilic attack on carbonyl groups with an intermediate formation of a covalent adduct.
