3-Fluoropyridine is a colorless, volatile liquid that has a strong odor. It can be synthesized by the reaction of 3-iodopyridine with fluorine gas in the presence of phosphotungstic acid and palladium as a catalyst. The reaction is carried out at room temperature under argon atmosphere. 3-Fluoropyridine has been shown to react efficiently with terminal alkynes to form substituted pyridines in high yield and purity. The potential use of this compound is for synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, or other organic compounds.
