Descripción:5-Fluorouracil is a cytotoxic drug used to treat cancer. It is a prodrug that is converted to 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine 5'-triphosphate (5-FUdR) in cells, and inhibits RNA synthesis by interacting with the enzyme thymidylate synthase. This drug has minimal toxicity in humans and has shown promising results against wild-type strains of bacteria. 5-Fluorouracil also has demonstrated synergistic activity when combined with the taxane docetaxel in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer. 5-Fluorouracil's oral prodrug, fluorouracil, can be administered as an alternative to intravenous administration. The drug is found in many pharmaceutical preparations, including benzalkonium chloride wipes, which are used as topical agents for skin disinfection before surgery or other medical procedures.
