Fluorochloridone is a fatty acid that was originally isolated from the liver of pigs. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the release of histamine and leukotrienes, which are mediators of inflammation. Fluorochloridone can also affect the permeability of cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit autophagy in testicular cells or its genotoxic effects on mammalian cells in culture. Fluorochloridone is an inhibitor of mitochondrial membrane potential, with activity against bacterial strains such as E. coli that are resistant to other antibiotics. Fluorochloridone binds to bacterial fatty acids and inhibits the enzyme activity of beta-oxidation. It also inhibits the enzyme activities of fatty acid synthase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, and acyl-CoA dehydrogenase in bacteria.
