3-fluoro-4-nitro-1-oxidopyridin-1-ium is the pyridine analog of 3,4-difluoronitrobenzene. It is a pharmaceutical that has been used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis. This drug inhibits the production of myelin and promotes remyelination by inducing oligodendrocyte precursor cells to differentiate into mature oligodendrocytes. The mechanism of action is not yet well understood, but it may be due to its ability to inhibit the formation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species in the CNS. 3-fluoro-4-nitro-1-oxidopyridin-1-ium can be prepared using a flow hydrogenation process which allows for automation with labeling and radiotracer synthesis.
