4-Fluorobenzotrifluoride is a reactive chemical that is used in the synthesis of fluoxetine, a drug used to treat depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The compound reacts with primary amines to form an ether, which can be hydrolyzed by hydrogen fluoride to produce the desired product. 4-Fluorobenzotrifluoride has been shown to be toxic when consumed orally or injected. It should not be handled without protection because it is corrosive and may cause burns on contact. It should also not be mixed with other chemicals unless they are inert because this could lead to explosions.
