For-Met-Ala-OH is a potent antimicrobial agent that inhibits the synthesis of proteins by binding to the ribosomes of mammalian cells. It has been shown to have potent antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, but not against gram-negative bacteria. For-Met-Ala-OH also inhibits polypeptide synthesis in these bacteria by binding to messenger RNA (mRNA). For-Met-Ala-OH is also able to inhibit chemotaxis of neutrophils and enhance phorbol ester production. This agent binds to the enzyme inhibitors on the surface of mammalian cells, thereby inhibiting their function.
