9H-Fluorene-4-carboxylic acid is a redox compound that is soluble in nonpolar solvents. It has a constant and second order rate constants of 0.037 M-1s-1 and 6.2x10^5 M-1s-1 respectively. 9H-Fluorene-4-carboxylic acid is metastable and can be monitored by measuring the fluorescence intensity, which will decrease as it reacts with chloride ions. It undergoes bond cleavage to produce an electron and a radical anion, which can be detected by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry and substituted with various substituents (e.g., chloride). The active site of the molecule is located on the 9th carbon atom from the carboxyl group, where the electron donating group forms a charge transfer complex with the electron withdrawing group on the aromatic ring.
