Farnesol is a natural compound that is found in many essential oils. It has been shown to have significant up-regulation in albicans, which may be related to its ability to activate Toll-like receptor and induce an inflammatory response. Farnesol also has the ability to inhibit multidrug efflux pump activity, which is an important factor in the development of drug resistance. Farnesol could be used as a novel antimicrobial agent against bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus or Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and fungi such as Candida albicans.
