Farnesene is a terpene that is found in plants. It has a molecular weight of 228.3 g/mol and a phase transition temperature of -62°C. Farnesene has been shown to be involved in bacterial resistance to certain antibiotics, such as erythromycin, by inhibiting the activity of enzymes which are involved in the production of fatty acids. Farnesene also has an odorant binding capacity and can be used as a natural insect repellent. The compound is produced by the plant metabolism from farnesyl diphosphate (FPP). Farnesene is synthesized through a two-step process: first, FPP is converted to geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGDP) and then GGDP is converted to farnesene.
