Ferrocene is a hydrogenated organometallic compound. It is a ferrocenecarboxylic acid, with the formula Fe(C5H5)2. Ferrocene is often used as a precursor to other iron-containing compounds, such as in the production of anti-knock agents for gasoline, metal coatings, and pharmaceuticals. The x-ray diffraction data and x-ray crystal structures of ferrocene have been determined. Ferrocene has significant cytotoxicity towards cultured human cells and has been shown to cause congestive heart failure in rats. The carbonyl oxygens are positioned on opposite sides of the central Fe atom in the molecule, which results in intramolecular hydrogen bonding between these groups. This stabilizes the molecule by reducing its reactivity with oxygen and other molecules and makes it more resistant to oxidative damage from reactive oxygen species than most hydrocarbons or other organic compounds containing C=C double bonds.
