It is also an analog of chloroquine, which has been used as a prophylactic agent against malaria. 2-Fluoro-5-nitroanisole prevents the development of malaria by interfering with the growth and reproduction of plasmodium. The mechanism may be due to its ability to inhibit the synthesis of DNA, RNA and protein in the parasite's host cell, leading to schizonticidal activity and death.
