Fmoc-alpha-methylalanine is a synthetic amino acid that can be used as an anticancer agent. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells and induce cell death by inhibiting protein synthesis. Fmoc-alpha-methylalanine has also been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli. This drug is synthesized from a grignard reagent with carbon nanotubes and 2-aminoisobutyric acid. The biphenyl group on the alpha position of the side chain serves as a fluorescence probe for detection in biological systems.
