Frangulin A is an acetate extract of the fungus Frangula alnus. It has been shown to have insulin-sensitizing effects and may be useful in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and hepatitis. The mechanism of action of Frangulin A is not known, but it has been shown to inhibit bacterial enzymes such as glycoside hydrolase and esterase, which are involved in fatty acid synthesis. Frangulin A has been shown to increase glucose uptake in liver cells by inhibiting the activity of phosphofructokinase-1, which is a key enzyme in glycolysis. This product also has antiviral properties that may be due to its ability to inhibit RNA polymerases and reverse transcriptases found in viruses such as HIV-1.
