• Descripción: 5-Formylphthalide is a byproduct of the preparation process for 5-carboxypthalide which is an intermediate in the synthesis of an anti-inflammatory drug. It can be prepared by hydrolysis of 5-carboxyphthalide with hydroxylamine and oxime to form 5-formylphthalide. The reaction requires magnesium, chlorine, and ketone.; 5-Formylphthalide is a hydrogenating agent that converts primary alcohols to their corresponding aldehydes and secondary alcohols to ketones. This reaction requires an aralkyl group (e.g., diphenylmethyl) or an aryl group (e.g., dipole). One use of this agent is in the preparation of 2,3,4,5-tetrahydrobenzofuran from benzene and ethylene oxide.
