The fibrinogen-binding peptide (FBP) is a small peptide that binds to fibrinogen, preventing it from converting into insoluble clots. FBPs are usually derived from staphylococcal and streptococcal species, but have been found in other bacterial types as well. The FBP inhibits coagulation by binding to the fibrinogen molecule and preventing it from forming a stable clot. Some of these proteins also inhibit platelet aggregation, which may be due to their ability to bind to bacterial surface proteins or proteases. The sequence of the FBP has been determined for a number of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, and these sequences are used for identification purposes.
