5-Fluorodopa (5FDA) is a fluorinated derivative of dopamine that has been used in vitro to study the uptake and regulatory mechanisms of dopaminergic neurotransmission. 5FDA has been shown to be an inhibitor of monoamine oxidase, which converts dopamine into 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid. 5FDA also inhibits other biochemical reactions such as the conversion of tyrosine to L-DOPA by tyrosinase. The decarboxylated product of 5FDA is L-DOPA, which is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of dopamine.
