4-Fluoro-L-Threonine is a hydroxylated amino acid that can be found in Streptomyces bacteria. It is synthesized from L-serine and 4-fluorobenzaldehyde, through the action of an enzyme called fluoroacetate synthase. 4-Fluoro-L-Threonine is used as a precursor for the synthesis of fluorinated drugs (e.g., antihistamines, anticonvulsants, muscle relaxants) and to study biological properties of these compounds. The first step in this reaction mechanism is the formation of an iminium ion after nucleophilic attack by the hydroxyl group on the carbonyl carbon atom. This intermediate then reacts with fluoride to form a stable carbanion that can undergo electrophilic substitution reactions at different positions on the heterocycle
