It is used to diagnose radiation exposure and to study the mechanism of excitotoxicity, which is the depletion of glutamine or glutamate from cells by high levels of stimulation. In addition, 4-fluoroglutamic acid has been shown to have anti-cancer properties, inhibiting tumor growth and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells. 4-Fluoroglutamic acid binds with fatty acids and can be used as an alternative energy source for cells that are unable to use glucose. The uptake of 4-fluoroglutamic acid into cells depends on the presence of an active transport system.
