3-Fluoro-D-(2-2H)Alanine is a molecule that is used in diagnostic agents and as an excipient. It is also used to produce monoclonal antibodies and medicaments for the treatment of infectious diseases, such as viral infections and bacterial infections. 3-Fluoro-D-(2-2H)Alanine inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase, which is involved in folate synthesis. This inhibition prevents bacterial replication and cell division, leading to bacterial death. 3-Fluoro-D-(2-2H)Alanine has also been shown to inhibit viruses that infect humans, such as HIV and influenza virus. Structural analysis has shown that 3-fluoroalanine binds reversibly to the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase by forming a covalent bond with the sulfhydryl group of Cys354 residue.
