18-Fluorooctadecanoic acid is a fluorinated fatty acid that is emitted by anthropogenic sources, such as coal-fired power plants. It inhibits the growth of cephalosporium, and it has been shown to inhibit the polymerase enzyme in polymerases that are involved in cellular replication. 18-Fluorooctadecanoic acid also inhibits the growth of viruses due to its ability to inhibit cellular polymerases. This compound also has anti-cancer properties, which may be due to its inhibition of proteasome activity and induction of apoptosis. 18-Fluorooctadecanoic acid is found in many natural compounds, such as tea tree oil, and can be used for the treatment of acne due to its antibacterial activity against P. acnes.
