3-Fluoro-2-methoxypyridine is a lead compound that inhibits the enzyme dihydroorotase, which catalyzes the conversion of dihydroorotate to orotic acid. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of this enzyme at micromolar concentrations in human liver and other tissues. 3-Fluoro-2-methoxypyridine binds with high affinity to the ribose binding site on the enzyme, leading to its inhibition. The pharmacokinetic properties of this compound have been studied in rats and humans, with an elimination half life of approximately 2 hours in both species.
