1-Fluoro-2,4-dimethoxybenzene is a methyl ether that is used in the synthesis of homologous compounds. It reacts with an aluminium tribromide to produce 1-fluoro-2,4-dibromomethoxybenzene. This compound can also be activated by reaction with long carbon chains, such as trifluoromethyl groups, and then undergoes a long chain substitution reaction via carbonation or decarboxylation.
1-Fluoro-2,4-dimethoxybenzene may also be reacted with chlorine to produce 1-chloro-2,4-dimethoxyphenol. This intermediate can be demethylated by reacting with sodium methoxide in methanol to yield 3-(trifluoromethyl)phenol.
