Alpha-(fluoromethyl)dehydroputrescine is an imine salt that is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme brain arginine decarboxylase (BAD). It has been shown to inhibit cellular activity in cell culture, and to have affinity for the active site of BAD. Alpha-(fluoromethyl)dehydroputrescine inhibits BAD by binding to the imine group of the enzyme's substrate, ornithine, preventing hydrolytic cleavage and inhibiting cellular activity. This inhibition may be due to alpha-fluoromethyl-dehydroputrescine's ability to compete with L-arginine for binding at the active site of BAD. The mechanism for this inhibition is still unknown.
