The equilibrium constant for the reaction between these two forms is 8.2 x 10, indicating that the tautomerization reaction will proceed with a large degree of spontaneity. This equilibrium can be disturbed by adding either an acid or base to the system, which will shift the equilibrium in favor of the desired form. The IR spectrum of 3-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-oxopropanoic acid has peaks at 1492 cm, 1528 cm, and 1602 cm, while its tautomer 3-phenylpropanoic acid has peaks at 1413 cm, 1514 cm, and 1606 cm.
