It is a carcinogenic agent that is used in the metabolism of 3-methylcholanthrene and 2-aminofluorene. This compound catalyzes the formation of reactive oxygen species, which results in DNA damage and mutation. Pretreatment with N-(7-fluoro-9H-fluoren-2yl)-N hydroxyacetamide reduces the carcinogenic effect of 8hydroxyquinoline on liver microsomes in rats. This drug also causes hepatocarcinogenesis in mice when administered at high doses over a long period of time.
