4-Fluorobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid is an intermediate in the production of isophthalic acid. It is a polycondensation product of phthalic anhydride and phenol. 4-Fluorobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid may be prepared by reacting aluminum chloride with a solution of phthalic anhydride in chloroform at 0°C to -5°C or by heating a mixture of phenol and aluminum chloride in xylene at 70°C to 80°C. 4-Fluorobenzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid has been found to have the following homologous series: 2,4; 2,6; 2,8; 3,6; 3,8. The governing chains are dimethyl and terminal chlorine substituents.
