4-Guanidinobenzoic acid is a basic compound that has been used as an analytical reagent, a substrate for film formation, and a model system. It is also found in human serum and spermatozoa. 4-Guanidinobenzoic acid binds to the enzyme trypsin and inhibits the activation of trypsinogen to trypsin. This inhibition may be due to its ability to bind with soybean trypsin and other basic proteins. 4-Guanidinobenzoic acid also has contraceptive effects in rats by inhibiting ovulation, which may be due to its ability to inhibit sperm motility. 4-Guanidinobenzoic acid also has anti-HIV activity which may be due to its ability to inhibit reverse transcriptase activity of HIV, thereby preventing viral replication.
