Gemfibrozil is a drug molecule that belongs to the class of arylalkyl, and is used as an anti-cholesterol agent. It has a specific site on the phospholipid bilayer membrane and binds to it, thereby inhibiting cholesterol synthesis. Gemfibrozil methyl ester is an electrophilic reagent that can be reacted with nucleophiles, such as ammonia or phosphonium salt. This reaction forms gemfibrozil methyl ester phosphonium salt, which has hypervalent properties. The gemfibrozil methyl ester phosphonium salt can also be synthesized from gemfibrozil and ammonium chloride in a solvent.
