Geraldone is a flavonoid that has been identified as the gene product of the regulatory gene, Gerald. Geraldone is found in lentils and other legume crops. It is a highly reactive molecule with a high oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). Geraldone also has antioxidant properties and can protect against radiation-induced lipid peroxidation. It also contains anti-cancer properties and can inhibit tumor cell growth, suggesting it may be useful for the prevention or treatment of cancer.
Geraldone is found in lentils and other legumes, such as peas, beans, chickpeas, soybeans, peanuts and lupins. The major sources of dietary flavonoids are tea leaves, apples and onions.
