Glucoraphanin is a chemical compound found in broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, which has potent anticancer activity. It is a quinone methide that is enzymatically converted to sulforaphane upon ingestion. Glucoraphanin can be purified from broccoli using preparative high performance liquid chromatography (prep-HPLC). Glucoraphanin and sulforaphane are potent inducers of enzymes that detoxify reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as glutathione S-transferase, quinone reductase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. These enzymes are involved in the cellular response to oxidative injury. Glucoraphanin also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects on murine hepatoma cells.
