Galanthaminone is an amide with a hydroxyl group and a chiral carbon. It is used in the synthesis of drugs that are used to treat Alzheimer's disease. Galanthaminone has been shown to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, which is important for memory and cognition. In addition, galanthaminone has been found to protect against oxidative injury by preventing mitochondrial membrane potential from decreasing.
