Gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteine (γGluCys) is a glutathione precursor that can be used in the treatment of oxidative injury. It is synthesized from glutamate and cysteine by the enzyme γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase. γGluCys has been shown to have antioxidant properties and to protect cells against oxidative injury. It also has inhibitory properties on inflammatory enzymes such as cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, and nitric oxide synthase. Gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteine has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of various pharmacological agents, including acetaminophen and morphine.
