It is an ester of glycerol and thioglycolic acid, which has been shown to be a useful topical agent for the treatment of idiopathic urticaria (hives). Glyceryl monothioglycolate also has anti-inflammatory properties that are due to its cationic surfactant properties. Glyceryl monothioglycolate can be used as a film-forming agent in personal care products such as lotions, creams, sunscreens, hair conditioners, and make-up. This compound can also be used as a protective coating on gauze or other medical devices.
