It is an intermediate in the multistep synthesis of pyridinium salts, which are used as active compounds in pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. This compound can be synthesized by reacting 3-iodobutyraldehyde with sodium methoxide in a two step process. The first step involves the conversion of 3-iodobutyraldehyde to 4-(3-iodoethoxy)butanal followed by reaction with sodium methoxide to give 4-(3-bromoethoxy)butanal.
