3-Hydroxypropionitrile is a chemical element that belongs to the group of organic compounds. It is an intermediate in the conversion of propionic acid to acrylic acid and it has been used in the production of malonic acid. 3-Hydroxypropionitrile can be produced by reacting sodium hydroxide with malonic acid, which is an organic compound that contains a carboxylic acid group. The reaction proceeds through two steps: first, the hydroxyl group in 3-hydroxypropionitrile reacts with hydrogen and then this product reacts with another molecule of malonic acid. The energy for these reactions comes from the kinetic energy of the molecules. The hydrogen bond between the two molecules stabilizes their reactant state.
