It is an effective anticancer drug, which has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells in cell culture by interfering with DNA replication and transcription. 5-Hydroxy-1H-imidazole-4-carboxamide is also capable of inhibiting the growth of hamster v79 cells. This compound has been shown to be active in acidic environments, such as hydrochloric acid, and may have potential for use as a chemotherapeutic agent.
