It binds to the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. 8-Hydroxymoxifloxacin also has an alkylthio group and a carbonyl group, which help with the binding process. This drug has been shown to be effective against hiv infection and other infectious diseases due to its high potency. The 8-hydroxymoxifloxacin molecule can be demethylated by liver enzymes into moxifloxacin hydrochloride, which is a more potent form of this drug.
