1-Hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate is a cationic surfactant that has been shown to exhibit high reactivity with siloxanes and other silicone materials. It has been shown to form micelles and bind to surfaces at a concentration of 1% by weight. The binding constants for the interaction of this surfactant with silicone are in the range of 10 -10 mol/L. The binding constants for 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate with other materials such as polystyrene, nylon, and polypropylene are in the range of 10 -9 mol/L. This surfactant is also able to form hydrogen bonds with water molecules, which may be responsible for its gelation properties.
